What is Green Cleaning?

Can commercial cleaning ever be environmentally friendly?

natural cleaning

We define green cleaning as any cleaning that causes less damage to cleaning operatives and the environment.

For you and your workplace this can mean

·      A higher overall standard of cleaning

·      Improved air quality

·      Less damage to surfaces from harsh chemicals

Investing in greener cleaning is proof that your company values sustainability. In this age of ‘greenwashing’ employees are quick to noticed when company values fall flat behind closed doors. Switching to green cleaning is a simple way your organisation can become more planet-friendly.

But how does green cleaning work in a commercial setting, as opposed to domestic cleaning?

In commercial settings ‘natural’ cleaning solutions like vinegar or essential oils simply aren’t strong enough to combat multiple sources of bacteria (you and your colleagues) But this doesn’t mean your workplace cleaning needs to fumigate the office.

There are many commercial products that are environmentally friendly and suitable for workplace cleaning. But not all are created equally. Some cleaning chemical manufacturers are known for being planet friendly at every stage of production. Others take use recyclable packaging. And other products aren’t harmful when inhaled, won’t pollute water sources, and aren’t tested on animals.

Unfortunately, there is always a compromise. You could find an incredible anti-viral anti-bacterial chemical but by the time you’ve shipped it halfway around the world you’ve increased your carbon footprint. Or you can have an amazing green cleaning kit, but it’s used by a cleaning operative who drives an old petrol car. Even microfibre cloths, a staple of green cleaning kits, release microplastics when washed.

There is no perfect solution to supplying green cleaning, but small changes can make a hugely noticeable impact.

To start with, most companies purchase cleaning products marketed as ‘green’ or ‘eco-friendly.’

To understand which products to use take care to do the following:

·      Read the fine print for each chemical product. Some of the leading eco chemicals are not anti-viral or anti-bacterial making them ineffective for commercial cleaning.

·      Decide which environmentally friendly qualifiers are most important to you

·      Test, test, test! Until you try it you just won’t know

As well as products you can train your cleaning operatives in greener cleaning methods, and your entire workforce in better sustainability practices. This can include:

·      Investing in high quality reusable cleaning cloths

·      Preventative maintenance of equipment

·      Storing chemicals properly

·      Make recycling easy to access

If this sounds like hard work that’s because it is! At Core Services Cleaning we’ve been researching all the above since 2016. If you would like to outsource to the green cleaning experts contact us today to arrange a free quote.
